All of Carmen’s calves are named after opera characters, and Minnie is no exception. She takes her name from La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West), one of Puccini’s most unusual operas. Unlike many of his tragic heroines, Minnie is a tough, gun-wielding saloon owner with plenty of grit and a happy ending — she cheats at poker to save her sweetheart and then rides off into the sunset with him. It’s a fittingly bold name for a heifer who may grow into one of the larger cows in our herd… a little comic contrast that makes her even more memorable. 🤠✨
