Every bull calf born at Mountain Heritage Farm begins here. We don’t decide at birth that a calf is breeding quality simply because he was born a bull. 

Over the next several months, we watch his growth, structure, temperament, genetics, and overall development before deciding his future. A calf shown on this page is under evaluation — not being presented as a proven or selected breeding bull.  If he makes the cut, he’ll be registered and move into our permanent sire herd. If he doesn’t, he’ll become a steer.

This is the part of herd selection most people never get to see. We think it’s worth sharing.

True to our philosophy, Gilbert (the bull on the left) went on to become a herd sire. We jokingly call him the Eeyore of bulls — calm, steady, and almost impossible to rattle. Good structure matters, but in an intact herd sire, temperament matters every bit as much. 

The bull on the right was impressive structurally, but his manners around people didn’t meet the high standard we require in a herd sire, so he became a steer.
