Carly Is Officially Dried Off

Red Dexter cow Carly standing in pasture before her dry-off period.

Today marks an important milestone for Carly — she’s officially dried off from her second lactation. For those new to the term, this means she’s taking a break from milking to rest and prepare for her next calf.

Carly’s most recent lactation tells the story in numbers. She started out strong after calving, peaked around the 1-month mark, and then followed the natural decline through summer. As you can see in the chart below, her production gradually tapered until it was time to give her a rest.

That steady decline is exactly what we look for — it means her body is ready for a proper dry period, which will help her calve strong and come back with another healthy lactation cycle.

This pause is a natural part of the dairy cycle and helps ensure her next lactation will be strong and healthy. We’ll be watching her closely as she heads toward calving again.
