Naming Sapphire’s Calf: Meet Mountain Heritage Ember ✨

Dexter milk cow Sapphire with her newborn red heifer calf Ember in the baby pen pasture at Mountain Heritage Farm.

This fall has been full of excitement here on the farm, and today I get to share one of my favorite traditions — selecting a name for a new calf.

Sapphire delivered a healthy red heifer a few weeks ago, and after watching her personality unfold, we’ve settled on her official name: Mountain Heritage Ember.

Why Ember? 🔥 Because she glows.

From her first steps she’s had a spark about her — bright, lively, and impossible to miss. Her deep red coat reminded me of glowing embers in a fire, warm and full of promise. And yet, her little nose looks like it was dusted in soot — a hallmark of the wild-red coloring in our Dexter herd. The name ties beautifully to Sapphire’s jewel theme and carries forward the legacy of strength and beauty we strive for in our cattle.

Like every name we choose, Ember’s wasn’t decided on a whim. We balance:

  • Tradition — Sapphire’s mother is Jewel, so jewel-inspired names were at the top of our list.

  • Temperament — Ember is spunky yet affectionate, a perfect match for her fiery name.

  • Heritage — the Mountain Heritage prefix marks her as part of our farm’s story.

Together, those threads weave a name that’s uniquely hers.

We can’t wait to see Ember grow into her name — whether that’s out in the pasture with her dam, following along during chores, or one day stepping into her own role as part of our family milk cow breeding program. For now, she’s content to bounce around the field, reminding us daily that even the smallest spark can light up the whole barnyard. 🐮✨
